Ladies, Say Goodbye to Unwanted Facial Hair!

Oh no, unwanted facial hair! Yes, that is something I know ladies do not like to talk about, but the reality is, it's a reality for women of all ages. As our body changes, it is common to experience baby fine to thick coarse facial hair. Brow to Toe offers facial waxing and facial threading services to meet your hair removal needs while protecting the integrity of your skin.

What causes facial hair in women?

I see two types of facial hair on female clients, vellus and terminal hair. We are born with vellus hair( peach fuzz) on our faces. As we age and experience hormonal changes, the hair may change to terminal hair which is longer, darker and/or thicker than vellus hair. The underarm and pubic hairs are examples of terminal hair. In addition to aging, medications and medical conditions may bring on the onset of hirsutism ( male pattern hair that appears in women). Due to the fact that hormones, medical conditions, and medications influence facial hair growth, I highly recommend consulting with a physician if you experience a sudden change in texture, length, or thickness.

What are the benefits of removing facial hair?

I can't count how many times I have heard, "Can you get rid of my mustache?" or "I need to get rid of these Andy Rooney eyebrows". Most women have experienced or will experience an eyebrow or lip wax at some point in their lives and will all agree that it is painful. Why do we put ourselves through that pain? Here a the top three reasons:

  • Feel more feminine

  • Flawless make-up application

  • Better product penetration

I must admit, I love MAC Cosmetics and invest in quality skin care products. The fact is facial hair acts a a barrier and prevents us from getting the best results from make-up and skin care products. Facial hair may make your foundation look "cakey" which actually makes the hair more noticeable.

What are three common forms of facial hair removal?

  1. Plucking - Ideal for the removal of coarse facial hair. Can be used at home or in a salon setting. As a TrueBrowSpecialist, I recommend staying away from the eyebrow area to avoid over plucking. More to follow, in a future blog, on why you should avoid plucking your eyebrows at home.

  2. Waxing - Is the most popular of all the forms of removal. While many beauty professionals are able to perform this service, I only receive this service from trained skin professionals. Improper technique and lack of training may result in a bad experience.

  3. Threading - Is an ancient form of hair removal practiced in the Middle East and is becoming increasing popular in Western culture. The esthetician makes the thread into a lasso and gently glides it along the face. During the process, one row of hair becomes trapped in the lasso and is pulled from follicle.

Which form of facial hair removal works best for you?

As mentioned above, there are many benefits to seeing a skin care professional especially when it comes to facial hair removal. A skin care professional is trained on skin conditions, skin types, products ingredients, medications, as well as, how they may be a contraindication for hair removal services. While you may have a preference, it is important to always provide accurate information.

I have yet to find a client with a contraindication to plucking and only two with contraindications to threading. On the other hand, there are many clients who are not ideal wax clients. For example, most teens are not ideal because they use some form of acne medication/product. Clients who have been prescribed medications by a dermatologist, or clients who have recently received or are using skin resurfacing services/products. I can't forget about my sun worshipers and tanning booth clients. You want to avoid waxing at least 2-3 days before engaging getting those UV rays.
